The iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models all come equipped with 3D Touch, a feature powered by interaction technology. This function enables what feels like multidimensional use with your device. 3D Touch offers unique home screen commands, pop up shortcuts and fingerprint pressure sensitivity. Apps downloaded onto your device can adopt one or all of these features.
While Apple has enabled it in many of the company’s own apps, they’ve also provided a way for App Store apps to enable 3D Touch as well. Here are some of our favorites.
Instagram has set the bar high for how social apps can incorporate 3D functionality into their user experience. In the Instagram app, you can use 3D Touch on a username to see their account card, swipe up to get unfollow (ouch), turn on post notifications, and send a direct message. You can also 3D Touch on a photo in the user’s “grid view” to preview it, and swipe up to interact with a like, comment or direct message.
Pinterest is the DIY, crafty, stylish person’s digital bulletin board and they recently enabled 3D functionality in their iPhone app. Now, with the press of a finger, you can launch straight into trending, search pins, and create a board.
Dropbox, the leader in non-Apple storage providers, has added 3D Touch for both home screen actions and pop up shortcuts. Actions include the most recent file update, offline files, upload photo, and search. In the Dropbox app, you can view media files like photos and music, and swipe up to get options like send link, make available offline, rename, move, and delete with 3D touch rather than having to fully open the files. This makes the Dropbox iPhone app MUCH easier to use.
OpenTable is another app that has set a high standard for incorporating iPhone features into its user experience, enabling Siri, Maps and 3D Touch. Home screen actions let you instantly view your favorites or access upcoming reservations. With peek, you can take a closer look at a particular restaurant before making a reservation and, you can move onto the next without first having to move back. There are also preview actions for the next available reservation times, making booking a nice dinner incredibly easy.
Evernote is the ever-popular note-taking app. The app incorporates 3D Touch to make digital note-taking even more efficient. Home screen actions allow you to start a new note, take photo, and set reminder.
